Feast Of Our Lady, Mother Of Africa

Acts 1:12-14
Luke 1:46-55
Luke 1:26-38

Today, we joyfully celebrate the vibrant feast of Our Lady of Africa! This special day honors Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, whose stunning dark bronze statue journeyed from Lyon to Algiers. Through her powerful intercession, Bishop Dupuch accomplished the incredible task of building a church in Algiers, overcoming initial resistance from the local population. The belief was strong that Our Lady would serve as the Protectress for both the Mohammedans and the natives, uniting hearts across cultures!

This cherished statue made its way from France in 1840 and was for many years entrusted to the devoted Cistercian monks of Staueli. It was Cardinal Lavigiers, the visionary founder of the White Sisters, who enshrined this beautiful image in the new basilica at Algiers. In a spectacular ceremony in 1876, the image was crowned, marking a moment of great significance!

Today’s thrilling gospel takes us to the Annunciation and Mary’s fiat revealing it as a powerful sign of love and fidelity. Thanks to Mary for with her we too can become handmaids of the Lord.

As we relish in the blessings of today, let’s remember that to fully embrace Mary’s support, we must follow the teachings of her Son found in the Bible. This last day of April sets the perfect stage for the beginning of May Devotion. May we be spared from disgrace and find the strength to uphold God’s commands! Amen.

Wishing you a wonderful day, and may Our Lady, Mother of Africa, intercede for us all! Amen.
