Federal Government Pledges Support For Free Press, Urges Media To Safeguard Democracy

In a significant address at the public presentation of “Nigeria Media Renaissance – Perspectives on Online Publishing” in Abuja, Minister of Information and National Orientation; Mohammed Idris, reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to maintaining a free, responsible, and vibrant press.

The event highlighted the crucial role of the media in deepening democracy and promoting national development.

Key Highlights:

Commitment to Press Freedom:

The Minister emphasized that President Bola Tinubu’s administration remains dedicated to upholding press freedom, aligning with journalism’s core values of truth, fairness, and accountability.

Collaboration for National Progress:

The government aims to collaborate with the media to raise standards, enhance public communication, promote media literacy, and present narratives that foster national unity and inspire collective progress.

  • Democracy and National Development:

Reflecting on Nigeria’s 26 years of uninterrupted democracy, the Minister stressed the need for both the government and the media to renew their commitment to democratic principles and public service.

  • The Role of Digital Media:

The Minister highlighted the critical role digital and online media play in shaping public opinion, promoting accountability, and fostering national cohesion, while also warning against the growing threat of fake news, misinformation, and disinformation.

  • Media Literacy Institute:

To strengthen the fight against disinformation and improve media professionalism, the Minister announced that the UNESCO Category 2 Media and Information Literacy Institute is scheduled to open in Abuja by November 2025.
