ALLOW THE FINGER OF GOD TO DIRECT THE COURSE OF YOUR ACTIONS
Throughout a significant portion of his public ministry, Jesus Christ appeared to downplay his true identity. At times, he encouraged silence, and when confronted about his identity, he often responded enigmatically or redirected the conversation, leaving others puzzled. The event described in today’s gospel passage undoubtedly showcased God’s saving work, yet it seemed to provoke the Pharisees.
Rather than acknowledging the divine nature of casting out a devil, they accused Jesus of using the power of Satan, Beelzebul, to perform the act. This reaction highlights the potential for the world to question not only Jesus’ power but also the power of the Church and every believer.
An insightful proverb states, “As the wound inflames the finger, so thought inflames the mind.” Just as we understand the distinction between clean and sticky fingers, our hearts can also become “sticky.” We can tarnish others’ experiences and leave an imprint on them. Our actions may make things challenging for others, leading to humiliation and a loss of self-esteem.
Our Christian faith is rooted in a loving relationship with God, from which our actions towards others emanate. Happiness flows from this love, and a non-judgmental attitude towards others stems from it. Jesus indicated that his power originates from the “finger of God,” which represents the Holy Spirit given to us.
During an address at the ANGELUS on St Peter’s Square on Sunday, 27 January 2008, Pope Benedict XVI emphasized that God reigns in the world through his Son, who embodies the power of the Holy Spirit, referred to as “the finger of God” (Luke 11:20).
Wherever Jesus went, the Creator Spirit brought life, healing both physical and spiritual ailments. God’s sovereignty is manifested in the comprehensive healing of human beings, revealing the merciful and life-giving nature of the true God.
We must believe that the Holy Spirit, which rested on Moses, can also empower those who were not part of the initial chosen group, such as Eldad and Medad, who still prophesied. The Holy Spirit can work through anyone who has faith in Jesus. According to St. Augustine, “Faith is to believe in the Word of God, what we do not see, and its reward is to see and enjoy what we believe.”
The Holy Spirit is the author of Sacred Scripture, providing deeper insights into Christ. God’s power prevails over sickness, evil, and death. It is crucial to remember that pointing an accusing finger at others results in three fingers pointing back at oneself. Jesus is the Divine Legislator, and God is the Eternal Judge.
May you not face unjust accusations or condemnation, and may you pray for the world that Christ died to save. Amen.
The day of the Lord is approaching much closer now than before. It is time to awaken and start anew.
