Give Everything To God

Tobit 12:1, 5-15, 20
Mk 12:38-44

In our first reading, the Archangel Raphael reveals himself and tells Tobit and Tobias that he was sent to test their faith and they have been found righteous. Before he leaves them he reminds them – and us – to always praise and thank God no matter the situation. He also tells them that while it is right to keep certain things secret it is always right to proclaim the works of God to all people. We too are Tobits trying to do good, our laments are his and Sarah’s, and our hope is their happy ending.

In the Gospel, we have the story of the widow who put very little into the offering box when compared to the money given by others, and yet hers was considered the greatest offering because she gave from what she needed to live on while others gave from their surpluses. We too are challenged to give to God from what we needed to live on. We are people of hope and encouragement gifted by the spirit and one with the Father through Jesus our Lord. That is God’s gift, our vision, and our goal.

We’re also reminded to give whenever we can and to whoever is in need. No need for heroics or Christian celebrity – just a sincere and generous heart. No matter what, we’ll always have enough to give whether we’re rich or poor. We have enough time, talent and treasures to give. We have enough comfort and care to give. Giving of yourself is enough. “No one has ever become poor by giving.” – (Anne Frank)

May God teach us how to be generous and may our acts of generosity be pleasing to Him. Amen.
