Globacom Abuja Based Station Dismantled Over N5 Billion Dept By NCAA

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority shut down a base station run by telecommunications company Globacom in Wuse 2 Abuja on Wednesday due to an N5 billion debt.

Capt. Musa Nuhu, the NCAA’s Director of Security, led a team of security operatives to the Glo Center for the enforcement.

Until Glo agrees to a payment schedule, Nuhu added, the agency will continue to shut Glo’s Main Switch Centres across the country.

On Wednesday, NCAA spokesman Sam Adurogboye verified the news to The Punch.

“One of Glo’s coordinating centres was disabled today in Abuja to pressure the company to commit to a payment plan. They owed NCAA and we have been on it for years. They do not honour meeting and do not give any payment plan,” he said.

The NCAA official said the agency had written to Globacom several times about the issue, but that the mobile network operator had declined to honor meeting invitations.

‘Re: Illegal Erection of High Structures and Refusal to Renew Expired Aviation Height Clearance Certificates by Globacom Limited,’ according to the most recent follow-up letter received by The PUNCH, dated October 4, 2021. Following Globacom’s refusal to pay the due fees totaling N5.9 billion, NCAA threatened that it would have no choice but to begin removing its masts across the country without further notice.

The letter was signed by NCAA Legal Adviser/Head, Compliance and Enforcement, Emmanuel Chukwuma

It said, “In the circumstance, having exhausted all avenues for a resolution of this matter, we are now left without a choice but to apply the relevant sanctions, including the dismantling of all your non-compliant masts nationwide. And this shall be without further notice to you.

“I am directed to inform you that the NCAA is not disposed to granting this latest (fourth) request to reschedule the meeting, particularly, as no reason was given for your non-attendance on the last date.

“A lot of companies have chosen to downsize, and maybe that was the right thing for them. We chose a different path. Our belief was that if we kept putting great products in front of customers, they would continue to open their wallets.”
