A police officer assigned to the Chairman of Bomadi Local Government Council in Delta State, Inspector O. O. Ojonogba from PMF 51, was fatally shot by unidentified gunmen.
The officer, widely known as “Ade,” was killed in Ughelli, located in the Ughelli North Local Government Area of the State, while performing his duties.
During the time of the attack, the chairman was reportedly away in Asaba for an official engagement, leaving his children under the protection of the deceased officer.
The incident took place in the early hours of Monday, August 25, when the attackers invaded the chairman’s residence.
Inspector Ojonogba, who was on duty, was reportedly asleep in his lounge when the assailants shot him in the neck. An eyewitness who verified the incident stated;
“At about 3–4 a.m., armed robbers entered the Council Chairman’s compound after breaking through the generator powerhouse while it was on. On the day of the incident, the chairman went with three others of his security, leaving behind the late police officer that was shot and his children only.
Immediately after gaining entrance, they went to the room of the security personnel identified as, Inspr. O. O Ojonogba attached to PMF 51 who was sleeping, and shot him on the neck in his sleep.”
The source revealed that the assailants then proceeded to the back of the main house, where they broke one of the burglary protectors and gained entry through the dining area before heading to the children’s room.
While in the children’s room, they demanded the father’s money and jewelry from their mother, firing shots at the PoP ceiling and the wall of the room.
“They took all their (children’s) phones, two iPads and a laptop, but they returned back to search for more gadgets and unfortunately they did not find any,” the eyewitness recounted.
The armed men reportedly fled the scene afterward, leaving the community in a state of shock following the attack.
The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Edafe Bright, stated that the Command was actively pursuing the perpetrators.
