Harvey Weinstein Returns to New York Court After ICU Stay

Harvey Weinstein was scheduled to appear in court in New York City on Thursday while the authorities reviewed California’s request for extradition to serve Harvey Weinstein’s remaining sentence for a 2022 rape conviction in Los Angeles.

Weinstein served time in prison in New York after being found guilty of rape in Manhattan in 2020; during this time, his sentence of 16 years for raping a woman at a 2013 Los Angeles film festival was put on hold.

However, the New York conviction’s 23-year term was revoked late last month.

Prosecutors and defense counsel claim that the hearing in Queens criminal court on Thursday morning, which occurred a few days after Weinstein left a city hospital, is connected to California’s request.

Despite this, the 72-year-old has stayed in New York’s custody as the Manhattan district attorney attempts to have him retried.

Prosecutors stated last week at a hearing that they could be prepared as early as September and that at least one of the two accused victims was willing to testify once more.

In that instance, the once-dominant former film magnate is charged with s*xually abusing a TV and film production assistant in 2006 and raping an aspiring actor in 2013. He refutes the accusations.

The highest court in New York overturned the verdict, concluding that the trial judge had unfairly biased Weinstein by allowing other women to testify regarding accusations he was not charged with.

At the time, the 2020 conviction was hailed as a turning point in the #MeToo movement, which got its start in 2017 with a wave of accusations against Weinstein.

Weinstein was committed to a state prison in upstate New York to fulfill his term.

He was taken to Manhattan’s Bellevue Hospital, where, according to his publicist, he received treatment for pneumonia and other medical conditions, after being placed under city custody subsequent to the ruling of the appeals court.

He was sent to the city’s Rikers Island detention complex on Monday.

Gentle Reminder: Be careful how you use your authority and influence, be wise, and treat others with respect.

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
