“I Never Insulted The Igbo Tribe”, Brymo Apologise For Comments

Olawale Brymo, a Nigerian singer, has apologized for his tweets about the possibility of a president of Nigeria coming from the southeast.

This comes after a petition was started by thousands of Nigerians to prevent the artist from receiving the All Africa Music Award, where he was nominated in the category of “Songwriter of the Year.”

The musician has drawn criticism after previously saying that the Igbo people are not prepared to produce a Nigerian president.

He also urged the region to run for vice president first before pursuing the presidency.

He addressed the situation and provided more context for his tweets during a live video post on his Instagram account on Friday evening.

Brymo claimed that the controversy arose as a result of his comments regarding the writer Chimamanda Adichie’s decision to accept a chieftaincy title in her birthplace of Abba, Anambra State, rather than accept national honours.

He said, “It is very important you understand that this entire fracas began with me seeing in the media that Chimamanda Adichie refused some national honours and had picked up some traditional title in the East at home.

“And I suggested that for me, it says a lot about the Igbo presidency because that actual seat is what the region should be eyeing right now. I have clamoured for Igbo presidency in the last few years, you wouldn’t believe it.

“It will pop in your mind when you hear the news that Igbos do not actually want the presidency.

“I did not insult the tribe, I am sorry to anyone who it sounded as such to. I was trying to weigh into a very important matter.”

This saying, “Igbos are not ready for the presidency”, is common in the mouths of the Nigerian elites.

There is no reasonable explanation for why a major tribe should be marginalized especially when it comes to the political affairs of a country.

It is actually sad when you discover that tribalism in Nigeria is a tool used by the Political elite to retain their positions of power and control over the poor masses.

Nigerians need to wake up and take their country back.
