ICPC Exposes Case Of Empowerment Items With Held By Lawmaker In Anambra State

The Independent Corruption Practices and Other Related Offences (ICPC) has stated that empowerment items intended for youths and women in the Oyi/Anayamelum Federal Constituency are yet to be distributed, despite the fact that it has been two years.

The materials were discovered in a warehouse belonging to the lawmaker, according to the ICPC, which made the discovery during the state’s ongoing Constituency and Executive Projects Tracking Exercise.

Grinding machines, sewing machines, driers, and clippers, among other equipment, were purchased in 2019 and 2020.

The ICPC officials who visited the area to check on the named recipients revealed that they had not received the items and that the lawmaker’s operatives had thwarted all attempts to get entry to the warehouse.

The police, who asked to remain anonymous, said they were denied entrance to the warehouse after three tries due to the lawmaker’s team’s unwillingness to send them there.

“We have the list of the intended beneficiaries but those we called said they did not receive the items,” the source claimed.

Nobody was around to show the ICPC team the evidence of the PRODA-awarded rural electrification project, according to the ICPC team.

Anti-graft agents in Ogbaru Federal Constituency said they were able to verify that solar-powered lamps in Okpoko and Umunankwo were erected and operating.

The ICPC officials in Orumba North and South also confirmed that a donation of an 18-seater bus to a community in Akpu had been approved for the lawmaker in 2019.

The ICPC officers were able to connect with some market women in the Anambra North Senatorial Zone, who received training and N80,000 in start-up funding.

The money, the ladies said, helped them expand their various businesses, which provided money for the family.

Nonetheless, ICPC personnel in Anambra North verified that certain kids were trained in ICT and received N20,000 as transportation cost.

Only one of the recipients claimed to have received a computer and printer, and none of the 22 trainees claimed to have received the N120,000 granted in the bill of quantities.

Youths were allegedly given tricycles, however, ICPC authorities said that no single beneficiary could be identified as proof of the project’s completion.

According to the Nigerian News Agency (NAN), the ICPC is currently on the third phase of the tracking effort, which would cover 18 states.

The commission’s spokesperson, Mrs. Azuka Ogugua, said in a statement that a total of 1,251 projects, including 1,024 constituencies and 227 executive projects, had been listed for tracking under the 2019 and 2020 allocations.
