Motherhood: Understanding And Addressing Disrespectful Behavior In Teenagers 9

As discussed in previous articles, teenagers’ disrespectful behavior is a major concern for most parents, especially mothers, as we face it more. Every good mother wants the children to grow up into a well-behaved adult.

Especially in the Nigerian Culture that automatically praises the father for the well-behaved child and rebukes or condemns the mother for the ill-mannered child.

Therefore, a sudden change of behavior at the teenage age is a major concern to most mothers.
There is a tendency to react harshly to correct them, but research shows such reactions have not been helpful. In choosing the best method to use in correcting them, we need to know that teenagers go through all sorts of hormonal changes and brain development stages.

According to Adolescent Psychologists, these different changes may cause teenagers to be rude. This is because, at this stage, the prefrontal cortex is the part of the brain responsible for decision-making. is underdeveloped, thereby affecting their decisions.

As their mothers, we have the major responsibility of correcting and disciplining them where necessary to check this behavior before it is too late. How do we do this to achieve the desired result? Kindly follow the steps below:

Stay Calm:
It may be difficult for you to stay calm when faced with your teen’s disrespectful behavior, but you must do it. It helps to communicate effectively and resolve the issue amicably.
To keep calm, you can take a deep breath, pause, and reflect on what happened. This will help you to reflect on the reason for your teen’s disrespectful behavior and decide on appropriate consequences. It will also help you to focus on the solutions, instead of playing the blame game, and also communicate the consequences of your teen’s actions to him or her.

And you will be able to have enough energy to stand your ground on the consequences.
God notices your dedication to caring for your home; He will bless you accordingly. So, be joyful, for a happy mother nurtures a happy home.

Today's Quote

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
