Israeli forces killed an armed man who opened fire on them during clashes prompted by an overnight arrest operation in the occupied West Bank on Thursday. A Palestinian woman who also attacked officers with a knife in Jerusalem’s Old City was also shot dead, Israeli police said.

The violence came amid tensions heightened by the deaths of five Palestinians on Sunday. At least four of them are claimed to be members of the Hamas militant group who were in gun battles with Israeli forces carrying out arrest raids in the West Bank.

Police said in a statement Israeli soldiers and paramilitary police on an operation near the West Bank city of Jenin shot and killed a Palestinian who fired at them.

A Palestinian medical source confirmed the death of a 22-year-old man. The Islamic Jihad militant group issued a statement saying he was one of its members and that he was killed in a shootout with Israeli forces carrying out a raid.

In the incident in Jerusalem, Palestinian woman tried to stab police in one of the streets leading to the Al Aqsa mosque. An AFP reporter heard gunshots and saw the body of a woman on the ground, later draped in a survival blanket.

Israeli police opened fire at the assailant and “medical forces who arrived at the scene determined her death”, police said.

The 30-year-old assailant, from Qabatiya in the north of the occupied West Bank, was leaving the Al Aqsa compound, Islam’s third holiest site, when she approached officers, police said.

Nearly 500,000 Jewish settlers live in the occupied West Bank, which Israel seized in the 1967 Middle East war.

The territory is home to more than 2.5 million Palestinians, and the Palestinians seek to establish a state in the West Bank and Gaza, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
