Music superstar Janet Jackson has sparked controversy by implying that Vice President Kamala Harris is not Black, repeating an opinion previously expressed by former President Donald Trump.
In an interview with The Guardian, Jackson discussed the impending election and Harris’ possibility to become the first Black woman in the White House.
Jackson asserted during the talk that she had heard Harris is Indian rather than Black—a remark equivalent of one that Trump made in July during a controversial discussion at the National Association of Black Journalists Annual Convention. When the interviewer corrected her, explaining that Harris is both Black and Indian, Jackson doubled down, saying, “Her father’s white. That’s what I was told. I mean, I haven’t watched the news in a few days. I was told that they discovered her father was white.”
Harris identifies as Black and claims that her mother is Indian and her father is of Jamaican-American origin.
Jackson also voiced her doubts about the impending election, hinting that turmoil may ensue regardless of the outcome and said she doesn’t anticipate a peaceful transfer of power.
A Gentle Reminder: Every obstacle is a stepping stone, every morning; a chance to go again, and those little steps take you closer to your dream.
