Today, the Catholic Church in Nigeria commemorates Our Lady, Queen and Patroness of Nigeria. Today also marks Nigeria’s Independence Day on October 1st. While Nigeria celebrates 66 years of independence (1960–2026), it is important to reflect on the nation’s history. The name Nigeria derives from root words that suggest an association with the Negro-land, reflecting a history intertwined with the experience of slavery and colonial rule. This enduring legacy continues to influence politics, the economy, and society at large. These 66 years may be seen as a period of transition. Like an elder bound by chains, Nigeria seeks unity, faith, peace , progress and stability. We prayerfully ask for divine guidance for our nation.
In today’s Gospel, we are reminded of Herod’s attempt to eliminate the infant Jesus, the Prince of Peace, amid a time of great hostility toward children. This echoes the biblical account of Moses’ birth in Egypt. Historically, many early Nigerian struggles resemble such episodes of hardship and conflict. We earnestly seek mercy and divine intervention for Nigeria.
Some wish for us to abandon our homeland, influenced by forces of corruption, violence, and injustice—including terrorism, kidnapping, fraud, and political turmoil. Some oppose our Christian faith and may seek to threaten our well-being. We must turn to God for guidance and wisdom so that principles of justice, equity, and peace may prevail amid challenges and unrest.
Christ fulfills God’s promises and prophecies. The Wise Men in the Gospel pay homage and offer gifts to the Lord, while Mary pondered these events in her heart. Nigeria, too, must submit to God’s will. When Christ is at the center of our lives, justice will flourish, and divine wisdom will guide us toward our shared goals of unity and peace under God. We ask Our Mother Mary and St. Joseph to intercede for us.
Let us come together in prayer for Nigeria today, asking that peace reign throughout the land. Through the maternal intercession of Our Lady, may God wipe away our tears and cultivate justice, peace, and harmony in our nation. Amen.
Happy Independence Day, Nigeria! May God bless Nigeria!
Happy New Month!
