Psalm 16(17):1-3,6-7
Luke 9:46-50

True greatness lies in serving others.

As Jesus journeyed with his disciples toward Jerusalem, he told them his mission was to go there and lay down his life for humanity. In contrast, the disciples thought he would establish an earthly kingdom by overthrowing the Roman Empire, and they began arguing among themselves over who would hold positions of power and earthly greatness. Jesus, however, pointed out that true greatness is found in humility and service. To drive this point home, he took a child into his arms and said, ‘The greatest among you is the one who is the least.’ The real measure of greatness, as St. Faustina teaches, is loving God and practicing humility.

We are called to be selfless in caring for both the worthy and the unwanted. Yet, often, our own sins—pride, jealousy, selfish ambition—stand in the way. Pope Benedict XVI remarked that, “The world promises comfort, but you are not made for comfort. You are made for greatness.”

We also hear of John the beloved disciple, who reported to Jesus that a man was casting out demons in his name and suggested stopping him. Jesus clarified that anyone not against us is for us. As Luke 9:50 tells us, greatness doesn’t come through violence. Christ came to show us how to do the Father’s will through obedience, reminding us that salvation is accessible to all through him. His words echo: “My food is to do the will of him who sent me” (John 4:34).

Doing God’s will involves loving both God and neighbor. St. Augustine beautifully describes love as having hands to help others, feet to run to the poor and needy, eyes to see misery and want, and ears to hear the sorrows of others. That’s what love looks like.

Today and every day, let’s put aside greed and reach out to the poor and needy. The Lord promises to lift us in due time. Whether rich or poor, we all have enough time, talents, comfort, and compassion to give. Giving of yourself is more than enough. As Anne Frank said, “No one has ever become poor by giving.” Whatever you offer, you will receive back tenfold. May our good deeds today be accompanied by charity.

Prayer

Father, you are the foundation stone on which I build my life. You are my God, the wonderful creator of everything that I am and all that I see. I ask for a blessing on the work of my hands. May the reign of your kingdom be extended in my business and works. I desire for you to be involved in every area of it. Blow upon me and this venture and fill it with your mighty presence. Come direct, shape, mould and take it so that it can be excellent for you. May it be a source of great blessing and goodness to those whom it serves.Amen.

Psalm 112:9 : He has dispersed, he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures for ever;
