Our Future Lies In The Hands Of God

Exodus 2:1-15
Matthew 11:20-24

No one knows tomorrow but the future lives in us. We must think of where lies our future. Our past experiences help us to coordinate the present moment in order to plan for the future. The mother of Moses wanted a future for her baby even though she knows it was a risky enterprise. The mother of Moses laid her son in a basket and laid it among the reeds at the edge of the river. She placed everything in the hands of God and hope for a future for her baby boy. He was later rescued by Pharoah’s daughter who derived his name from the occurring situation and adopted him as her child. Moses then became a powerful man in Egypt. He had the passion to intervene for his countrymen but his deeds made him a fugitive. He later became Israel’s first leader through whom God will deliver his people from the hands of slavery in Egypt.

Today’s gospel begins with some strong emotional words from our Lord. Jesus had been to Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum, the people there knew him, they had met him, experienced him, witnessed his very presence, signs and miracles and yet they were indifferent, they did not care about their relationship with God. Jesus then, indicated what the future would be like for these cities if they do not repent and listen to the message of salvation. We all have a future to protect and we have to decide what that future is going to be like.

As Christians, we are more privileged than the people of Chorazin, Bethsaida and Capernaum because we have a better understanding of who Jesus is and the deposit of faith that has been entrusted into our care but if this expression remains only on the level of knowledge and understanding without believe then we might become rejected by God Himself at the end of our lives. Let us place our future in the hands of God and may He grant us the grace to heed the message of repentance and salvation. Amen.
