Today, the Catholic Church in Nigeria commemorates Our Lady Queen and Patroness of Nigeria. This coincides with Nigeria’s Independence Day, marking 64 years of independence (1960-2024).
This origin is deeply rooted in a history of black slaves ruled by colonial masters, casting a shadow that persists in various aspects of Nigerian society, including politics and the economy. It’s been 64 years of what can be likened to bondage, akin to an old man bound in manacle chains. Our nation needs divine peace.
In today’s gospel, we learn of Herod’s pursuit to kill the infant King and Prince of Peace, leading to great hostility among children. This is reminiscent of the events during the birth of Moses in the Old Testament.
However, in the time of Christ, Egypt became a place of refuge. The tragic experiences of genocide and infanticide have also been felt in the early history of Nigeria and continue to this day. Our nation seeks divine mercy.
Some individuals advocate fleeing from our Fatherland and engage in reprehensible activities such as poverty, hunger, inflation, corruption, child killings, ritual murders, fraud, terrorism, kidnapping, and political manipulations.
Additionally, some oppose the existence of Christians and pose a threat to our lives. Amidst these challenges, seeking God’s guidance and providence is essential for the establishment of justice, equity, and peace in a world marred by bloodshed, sorrow, and tears.
Christ represents the fulfillment of God’s prophecies and promises. The Three Wise Men in the gospel paid homage and presented gifts to the Lord, while Our Lady pondered everything in her heart. This exemplifies the submission of everything to God, which is what Nigeria needs.
With Christ in our lives, justice will prevail, and the Eternal Wisdom will guide us toward our collective goal as one nation under God. May Our Mother Mary and St. Joseph intercede for us. Amen. Patriotism, selfless sacrifice, and discipline are indispensable for all Nigerians. No one should be above the law, whether at home or in the diaspora.
Today, we come together in prayer for this nation, seeking peace and the maternal intercession of Our Lady to alleviate our suffering, allowing God’s justice, peace, and harmony to flourish in our land. Amen.
Happy Independence Day, Nigerians! God bless Nigeria! Happy New Month!
“A lot of companies have chosen to downsize, and maybe that was the right thing for them. We chose a different path. Our belief was that if we kept putting great products in front of customers, they would continue to open their wallets.”
