Our Lady Queen & Patroness Of Nigeria

Today the Catholic Church in Nigeria celebrates Our Lady Queen and Patroness of Nigeria. Today also being the 1st of October is Nigeria Independence Day. Nigeria is 62years (1960-2022) but are we free?

Christ is the fulfillment of God’s prophecies and promises. The Three wise men in the gospel, pay him homage and presented gifts to the Lord and Our Lady pondered everything in her heart, That is what we need in Nigeria to submit everything to God. When Christ comes into our lives justice will reign and him, who is the Eternal wisdom will help us and show us the way to our common goal as one nation under God. Mary Our Mother and St. Joseph intercede for us.. Patriotism, selfless Sacrifice and discipline is required by all Nigerians. No one above the law no one should is left either at home and in diaspora.

In today’s gospel also, we are told of how Herod wanted to kill Jesus-The infant King and prince of peace. At that time, there was great hostility on children. This reminds us immediately of what happened during the birth of Moses in Egypt the Old Testament. However, in the time of Christ, Egypt became the place of refuge. The tragic experience of genocide and infanticide was felt also in the early beginning of Nigeria as a country till this present moment. We need your mercy in our nation, O Lord.

There are people who wants us to flee from our Fatherland. There are some who are mercenaries of evil. These includes corruption, killing of children, ritual killing, fraud, terrorism, kidnapping, poli-tricks etc. There are also people in this life who do not like our existence as Christians and they can do anything to haunt us down, tear us apart and cut short our lives. However there is a need to seek God’s direction and providence in all these things so that justice, equity and peace can reign in this darkened world full of bloodshed, sadness and tears.

Two year was a remarkable history in Nigeria with the ENDSARS protest. On the 18th of October, 2020. In a release addressed to Nigerian youths and fellow Nigerians, Archbishop Akubeze, the Archbishop of Benin-City and President, CBCN, he said,”The Government of Nigeria must realise that anyone who desires peace, must work for and cherish justice since there can be no true peace where injustice is the order of the day as it is in Nigeria today.’ He added that, “We need to also remind ourselves that peace is not the absence of war because wherever there is injustice, war has already been declared on the people”.

The Catholic Bishops of Nigeria have also appealed to all Nigerians to respect human life and to strive for peace in the country, that is based on justice and equity. The bishops added their voices to that of the Holy Father, Pope Francis, to appeal to those in government and those who have power, to desist from actions and policies that continue to plunge the nation into violence and crisis.”-This is contained in a statement on Thursday in Abuja by the National Directory of Social Communications. They also dedicate Nigeria to the powerful intercession of our Blessed Mother Mary, the Queen of Nigeria.-Vanguard 30, September 2021.

Let us pray together today for this nation that peace, equity and fairness will reign in Nigeria and through the maternal intercession of Our Lady, God will wipe away our tears and allow his justice and harmony to flourish in our nations. Amen.

Happy New Month!
Happy Independence Day Nigerians!
God bless Nigeria!
