Pray For The Harvest

The kingdom of God is at hand. Jesus needs disciples who are not easily side-tracked or seduced by the ‘trappings’ this world, but rather possess an innate capacity to put others first. Just as he did.

Lk 10.1-12, 17-20

Miracles are signs from heaven that God is always and totally in charge of creation. It’s important to remember that God can and does intervene in the world He has made. The coming of Christ was the supreme intervention. It changed everything, for ever.

Today, we read of his commission to the seventy-two. They were truly blessed to go before the Lord and to prepare the way for his coming. The disciples rejoiced that Christ had given them a miraculous share in His own healing powers. In response to their crowing, He reminds them that their expected arrival in heaven will be even more wonderful.

Today, we live in a disposable and superficial world, where we act first and think later. We want to have what we want, do what we want, and say what we want, with no regard to kindness, respect, or mutual affection for anyone else. It is a selfish society and it is easier to do what you want, rather than do as the Father has asked us as true disciples and true missionaries such as – love one another; feed the hungry, clothe the naked, or comfort the sorrowful; live your vocation, whether you are single, married, a priest or a religious. Where is humility, charity and brotherly love today? Where is the love?

Ultimately the only way is for our will be to be harmonized with His. When that happens, everything goes more smoothly, and we start to appreciate that even those things that happen which we don’t understand are in the long run somehow part of His plans for our well-being.

The Lord needs disciples who are discerning, who can boast about their selfishness for the sake of who are capable of carrying out the task of missionary evangelization, who are capable of humility, self-discipline, prudential judgements and who bear the peace of Christ within their own self and radiate this same peace to all they encounter.

Eternal God, fill our hearts with light. Open our eyes to the marvels of your saving work among us and free those gripped by the power of the evil one. Grant this through Christ our Lord.
