Namibian President Hage Geingob will be treated for cancer after routine medical checks revealed the presence of “cancerous cells”.
The Namibian Presidency said on Friday, January 19, that the 82-year-old leader underwent a colonoscopy and gastroscopy on January 8, followed by a biopsy.
“On the advice of the medical team, President Geingob will undertake appropriate medical treatment to deal with the cancerous cells,” it added.
Geingob’s office declined to provide any information on his diagnosis but stated that he would continue to work.

Geingob, the southern African nation’s president since 2015, is set to complete his second and final term this year.
In 2013, Geingob underwent brain surgery. A year later, he informed the public that he had survived prostate cancer. In 2023, the tall, deep-voiced leader had an aortic procedure in nearby South Africa.
Namibia will hold elections for a new leader in November. Geingob will not stand for re-election. Last year, the ruling party, the South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO), announced Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah as its candidate for the election. She serves as the party’s vice president and Namibia’s current deputy prime minister.
