Put World Cup Loss Behind, Focus On AFCON – Tinubu Urges Super Eagles

After the heartbreaking exit of the Super Eagles from the FIFA World Cup qualification process, President Bola Tinubu has directed the national team to promptly redirect their attention and commence thorough preparations for the forthcoming African Cup of Nations (AFCON) competition.

In a statement issued through his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, the President praised the Super Eagles for their dedication and commitment, even though they suffered defeat in the playoffs on Sunday, November 16.

Nigeria’s aspiration to participate in the 2026 World Cup was dashed when DR Congo knocked out the Super Eagles in a thrilling qualifier play-off that took place in Morocco. The highly charged encounter finished 1-1 following extra time and was eventually settled by a 4-3 penalty shootout victory for DR Congo, which has now qualified for the Inter-Confederation play-off.

President Tinubu recognised the profound sadness experienced throughout the country, pointing out that the defeat meant the Eagles had missed out on qualifying for the World Cup tournament for the second straight occasion.

He stated, “Notwithstanding the unfortunate loss, we must commend the players for their efforts and continue to support them. We must now plug all the loopholes. Our football administrators, players, and indeed all stakeholders must go back to the drawing board.”

The President ended with a firm instruction: “Now is the time to focus all efforts on the Cup of Nations. Our Super Eagles must recover the lost glory.”

This defeat represents a crushing blow for a gifted generation of Nigerian footballers. The loss terminates their campaign for the 2026 World Cup and places enormous pressure on the squad to deliver at the next significant tournament.

The African Cup of Nations (AFCON), scheduled to take place in Morocco from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026, has now become the immediate focal point for the team.

A Gentle Reminder: Every obstacle is a stepping stone, every morning; a chance to go again, and those little steps take you closer to your dream.
