Saint Joachim and Saint Anne, parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Exodus 24:3-8
Psalm 49(50):1-2,5-6,14-15
Matthew 13:24-30

Imagine the electrifying moment when Moses, freshly descended from the majestic heights of Mount Sinai, bursts onto the scene with the divine Word of the Lord and the legendary Ten Commandments! The crowd, filled with bold confidence, erupts in a unified declaration: “We will do everything the Lord has commanded us! We will heed and obey all that He has said!” It’s an exhilarating scene—so full of certainty and enthusiasm, yet, deep down, we know the truth: humans are not always as steadfast as they claim!

This doesn’t diminish the value of good intentions; they carry immense power! However, let’s face it—temptations, distractions, and limitations can easily lead us off course. What’s truly remarkable? God never throws in the towel on us! He reassures us that perfection isn’t the prerequisite for His love. We are wrapped in forgiveness, reminding us we can be triumphant, even when we stumble.

On this thrilling feast day of Sts. Joachim and Anne, we celebrate how parents can radiate that profound love of God! While the legendary parents of Mary, the Mother of Jesus, may remain shrouded in mystery, we can be certain they instilled both loving discipline and grace to guide their daughter. This beautiful cycle of forgiveness empowers us to draw nearer to God and embrace His love. This is what holiness truly is—the realization that chasing perfection can often hold us back from true spiritual growth.

Today’s gospel from St. Matthew brings us more inspiration, as Jesus urges His disciples to be patient with the weeds that sprout alongside the wheat. The parable of sowing seeds reminds us that our journey isn’t about achieving a flawless harvest. Yes, there will come a time to separate the weeds from the wheat, but let’s not lose sight of the precious wheat—the abundant love of God—even in the face of our sins and imperfections. Embrace this thrilling adventure of faith, and let love lead the way!
