Saint Matthew, Apostle, Evangelist

Ephesians 4:1-7,11-13
Psalm 18(19):2-5
Matthew 9:9-13

“With my whole heart have I sought you: O let me not wonder from the commandments”. Psalm 119:10.

Today marks the celebration of the feast of St. Matthew within the Church. St. Matthew, a tax collector, was called by Christ, an encounter that transformed his life. He dedicated himself to serving God wholeheartedly and adhering to His commandments, ultimately penning the renowned Gospel according to Matthew. Throughout this Gospel, Jesus is depicted as Immanuel, God-with-us, a constant presence from beginning to end.

Matthew acknowledges Jesus as the ever-present Son of Man descended from the line of David, who came to summon the sick and lost back to the Father. When Christ dined with tax collectors and sinners at Matthew’s house, the Pharisees questioned this act. Christ’s response, “I desire mercy, not sacrifice. I did not come to call the righteous but sinners,” underscores the importance of mercy and redemption for all who heed His call for salvation.

Recognizing that all have sinned and fallen short of God’s glory, we must align ourselves with God’s mercy and grace, transitioning from sickness to health, unrighteousness to holiness, and from being lost to being saved. This message, imparted by Christ to his disciples, is a universal mandate and commission for all believers (Matthew 28:19-20).

St. Matthew’s humility and acceptance of Christ, alongside his commitment to bearing witness through his writing and accountability, exemplify the fundamental principle that should guide every disciple. Acknowledging our need for God’s mercy, remaining attentive to the teachings of Christ, and engaging in daily conversion and communion with Him are central to our journey as disciples.

In conclusion, as we are reminded in Isaiah 55:6 to “Seek the Lord while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near,” may we continually seek God’s presence for spiritual, physical, and all other blessings. May our prayers be answered promptly, and may the Lord meet our needs through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen..
