Saint Thomas Aquinas, Priest, Doctor

Hebrews 10:1-10
Psalm 39(40):2,4,7-8,10,11
Mark 3:31-35

Today, we commemorate the profound contributions of Saint Thomas Aquinas, a pivotal figure in scholastic philosophy and theology. An Italian Dominican friar, philosopher, priest, and recognized as the “Angelic Doctor,” Aquinas’s impact as a jurist and thinker has permeated ecclesial studies and the broader intellectual tradition. His extensive body of work has become a cornerstone in the development of theological education for clergy and lay leaders alike.

Aquinas is renowned for his methodological rigor and philosophical depth, yet he anchors his teachings in practical wisdom concerning the virtues of prudence, wisdom, and humility. For instance, he outlines a four-step framework for the cultivation of wisdom: to “listen willingly, seek diligently, respond prudently, and meditate attentively.” This systematic approach not only enhances intellectual capacity but also promotes spiritual growth.

He further expounds on the concept of prudence with incisive clarity: “One should practice the virtue of prudence in discerning when to speak and when to remain silent. In essence, one ought to restrain oneself from speaking on matters of which they lack understanding.” The wise individual recognizes the appropriateness of prudence, while true humility acknowledges one’s limitations in knowledge and the necessity of seeking forgiveness when warranted.

This guidance is especially pertinent for those striving to embody authentic Christian principles. The inclination toward imprudent declarations often supersedes the humility required to acknowledge one’s fallibility. Moreover, individuals frequently disregard the counsel of those with greater insight and cling to a misguided sense of pride.

In navigating these challenges, we draw strength from the scriptural wisdom that states: “I prayed, and prudence was given me; I pleaded, and the spirit of Wisdom came to me.”

In faith, let us renew our commitment to the deliberate practice of prudence, wisdom, and humility in our daily lives. Saint Thomas Aquinas, intercede for us!
