Segun Johnson Spills How Top Musicians Really Make Their Money At Events

Renowned musician and Owambe star Segun Johnson has disclosed the unconventional methods some prominent Nigerian artists, famous for performing at upscale events and parties, use to earn their income.

During his appearance on The Teju Babyface Deep Dive Podcast, Johnson revealed that these elite musicians often forgo a standard performance fee. Instead, they set a financial goal for how much money the attendees at the events are expected to shower them with.

He recounted a stunning instance where a prominent Owambe performer (whose identity was not disclosed) allegedly informed a client, “If you want me at your party, I must make N50 million that day.” No set fee, no performance charge—just a straightforward expectation of earnings from the cash sprayed at the event.

Johnson elaborated that these top-tier artists occasionally decline lucrative bookings if the guest list lacks “big names” or influential figures.

Instead, they’ll opt to perform at an event for free if they’re confident the audience includes affluent or prominent individuals. The tactic? Perform for clout, and the cash will pour in—quite literally.

“They know the kind of people who spray,” Segun noted.

Curiously, Segun also shared off-mic the identity of one such high-profile musician with Teju, though the name wasn’t disclosed in the segment. His revelation has ignited discussions and sparked intrigue about the inner workings of these lavish gatherings.

A Gentle Reminder: Every obstacle is a stepping stone, every morning; a chance to go again, and those little steps take you closer to your dream.
