At the threat of evil, where do you run to? When faced with a compelling danger do you follow the right path or the wrong way? Hezekiah was a king of Judah who loves the Lord’s commands. As the Assyrian invasion continued over Israel, Hezekiah received a threat letter from Sennacherib, king of Assyria. Hezekiah presented this evil report before the Lord in his Temple.

Isaiah then sent God’s word of assurance to him making him strong and fearless. That night an angel of the Lord was sent and one hundred and eighty-five men were struck dead at the enemies camp and they fled in fear. Only God can do this. Hezekiah was vindicated. God upholds his city forever. Holiness is fitting to God’s house.

Holiness is and being faithful to God’s love in how we think, speak and treat others no matter the situation we are going through. In today’s gospel, Jesus contrast holiness and pearls with dogs and swine? In the ancient world, pearls were considered to be precious and of great value.   Pearls were worn to enhance one’s appearance.

Jewish law regarded swine as unclean as well as wild dogs.  Jesus is encouraging us to stay away from those things that are spiritually or morally unclean. God calls us to an unconditional love which embraces all of humankind.  When we love our neighbor unconditionally, we fulfill the law of God and the prophets.

In addition, Jesus’ use of the narrow gate in today’s gospel, is about making right choices that affect how we live each day.  What kind of choices do I make daily?  When it comes to danger where do I seek refuge? How do I make use of the gifts God has given to me including taking care of myself? How consistently do I live the command of the Golden rule of loving others unconditionally?

May Our Lord Jesus give us the grace to make good choices and to love others as you call us to love.

Peace

“Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the entire world, stimulating progress, giving birth to evolution.”
