Today, we celebrate the Nativity of John the Baptist. Within the Catholic tradition, only three individuals are observed with solemnity on their birthdays: Jesus Christ on December 25; His mother, the Virgin Mary, on September 8; and John the Baptist on June 24. These individuals hold significant roles in the history of salvation. The mission of John the Baptist was divinely ordained prior to his birth. This reflection underscores that our existence is also part of God’s divine plan, predestined before our birth. Each person has a unique purpose and mission, just as John the Baptist did. Historically, John the Baptist is esteemed as a figure of truth and humility. His primary role was to prepare the way for the Savior.
It is essential to recognize that no one can serve as a herald of the Messiah without divine selection. Similarly, no individual can effectively bear witness to the Word Incarnate without God’s direct appointment. John the Baptist was sanctified and called into service through his spiritual connection with Christ, even before birth—being baptized in his mother’s womb during the visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. He symbolized the light of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Redeemer.
It was God who named him and assigned his mission prior to his birth. John was a messenger who brought healing and joy to his parents. As a gracious and blessed child, he was a significant figure for Israel, chosen to serve as the prophet preparing the way for the Lord. He exemplified humility and courage, spoke the truth, and ultimately sacrificed his life for Christ.
In our daily lives, how do we perceive our roles as bearers of the Good News of Jesus? What thoughts and emotions arise when we acknowledge that we were called by God even before our birth? Have we responded to this divine calling? Furthermore, what actions can we take to remind ourselves and others of God’s graciousness?
Our responsibilities should be carried out with immense humility and courage. This can be achieved by adhering to God’s commandments with graciousness, speaking the truth, and embodying Christ’s love. It is important to diminish ourselves so that Christ may increase within us.
We pray that the Lord grants us the grace to fulfill our divine calling, given to us before our birth—namely, to bear witness to the Good News and to prepare the way for the Lord Jesus’ arrival into our lives and the lives of others.
May we pursue Christ’s mission with love, courage, and humility. May we remain steadfast in our obedience and dedication to God’s commands. Amen.
