WEDNESDAY OF THE FIFTH WEEK OF LENT

In today’s exhilarating first reading from the book of Daniel, we witness a dramatic showdown between King Nebuchadnezzar and three remarkable men: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego! These fearless individuals take a bold stand, refusing to worship the king’s towering, man-made statue. Why? Because they know the One, true God and pledge their loyalty only to Him. With unwavering confidence, they declare to the king, “If our God, whom we serve, can save us from the white-hot furnace and your hands, O king, may he save us! But even if he will not, know, O king, that we will not serve your god or worship the golden statue that you set up” (Daniel 3:17-18). Wow!
Did you catch the profound courage in their words? The phrase “But even if he will not…” resonates with pure conviction. These men recognized that their destiny lies in God’s hands, not the king’s. They place their full trust in God’s will, ready to face whatever lies ahead. When the king throws them into a blazing furnace, they encounter a mysterious fourth figure, appearing like the Son of God! This powerful moment illustrates that anyone who believes in God and calls upon His name will find salvation—reminding us that even in death, there is hope and resurrection!
Just as Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego demonstrate steadfast loyalty and faith in God, we too are called to commit to Him wholeheartedly, no matter what challenges we face. This same confidence, love, and dedication illuminate the life of Christ Jesus. In today’s gospel, Jesus passionately asserts, “If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:31-32).
This truth is nothing less than salvation through Jesus, and the freedom He offers liberates us from sin and death. Jesus invites us to find the pathway to the God of Israel through Him! Yet, the Jews—long devoted to the God of Israel—are skeptical. Who is this Jesus making such astonishing claims? Fueled by doubt, they plot against Him, but Jesus sees through their plans and powerfully declares, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and am here; I did not come on my own, but he sent me” (John 8:42).
Now, here’s the burning question for you: Are you channeling the boldness of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, fully aware of Jesus as the Son of God? Do you love Him passionately with all your heart, soul, and mind, even when facing tough choices? Or are you allowing something of temporary value to come between you and God? Are you caught bowing down to idols while trying to honor God? Do you serve man over the will of God the Father? Think deeply about your response—don’t let self-deception cloud your judgment. God seeks your utmost allegiance!
So, as we embark on this Lenten journey, make time for the Sacrament of Confession and ask Jesus to transform your heart to be more like His. This is your moment for renewal!
