Tips for Comfort and Care during Harmattan

Harmattan, the dry and dusty season in Nigeria, typically occurs between November and March. It’s characterized by cooler temperatures, low humidity, and hazy air filled with dust particles from the Sahara Desert. While some may enjoy the cooler weather, Harmattan can also take a toll on your body, skin, and overall well-being. Here are some tips to help you maintain yourself during the Harmattan season.

  1. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
    One of the biggest challenges during Harmattan is the dry air, which can lead to dehydration. Although the cooler temperatures may reduce the feeling of thirst, it’s essential to drink plenty of water. Carry a water bottle with you and aim to consume at least 8 glasses of water daily. Additionally, consider incorporating hydrating fruits like watermelon and oranges into your diet to help replenish lost moisture.
  2. Skincare Is Key
    The dry air during Harmattan can leave your skin feeling parched, flaky, and irritated. To combat this, invest in a good moisturizer. Opt for rich, creamy lotions or oils that lock in moisture, such as shea butter, coconut oil, or almond oil. Make sure to apply your moisturizer immediately after a shower to seal in the moisture. Lip balms are also crucial during this season, as chapped lips are a common problem. Don’t forget to protect your skin from the harsh wind by wearing scarves or face masks when outdoors.
  3. Keep Your Environment Moist
    To reduce the dryness in your environment, you can use a humidifier indoors to maintain some moisture in the air. If you don’t have a humidifier, placing a bowl of water near a heater or radiator can help add some humidity. This simple trick helps prevent your skin and respiratory system from getting too dry.
  4. Dress in Layers
    While Harmattan brings cooler temperatures, it can also get quite warm during the day. Dressing in layers is key to staying comfortable. You can wear light, breathable clothes during the day and layer them with warmer items like sweaters or jackets in the morning and evening. This allows you to adjust your clothing based on temperature changes.
  5. Protect Your Eyes and Respiratory System
    The dusty air can irritate the eyes, making them dry and itchy. To prevent this, wear protective sunglasses when outdoors to shield your eyes from the dust. Additionally, Harmattan often leads to respiratory discomfort, so consider using a face mask or covering your nose and mouth with a cloth when venturing out.

By following these simple tips, you can maintain your health, comfort, and overall well-being throughout the Harmattan season. Embrace the change in weather while taking the necessary precautions to stay hydrated, moisturized, and protected from the elements.
