James Cameron, the filmmaker of Titanic and an authority on submersibles, claimed he foresaw Titan’s demise days before the remains of the missing submersible were discovered.
The devastating implosion of the submersible claimed the lives of all five occupants.
Before the news was officially confirmed, Cameron informed BBC News that he had predicted what would happen to the unfortunate submersible.
“I felt in my bones what had happened,” Cameron said.
“For the sub’s electronics to fail and its communication system to fail, and its tracking transponder to fail simultaneously – sub’s gone.
“I knew that sub was sitting exactly underneath its last known depth and position. That’s exactly where they found it.”
He added:”(It) felt like a prolonged and nightmarish charade where people are running around talking about banging noises and talking about oxygen and all this other stuff.
“I immediately got on the phone with some of my contacts in the deep submersible community. Within about an hour I had the following facts. They were on the descent. They were at 3500 meters, heading for the bottom at 3800 meters.
“We now have another wreck that is based on unfortunately the same principles of not heeding warnings.”
When communications were severed, the US Navy claimed to have heard a sound resembling an implosion.
According to a senior Navy officer, the US Navy went back and analyzed their acoustic data and discovered an abnormality that was “consistent with an implosion or explosion in the general vicinity of where the Titan submersible was operating when communications were lost”.
The official discussed a delicate acoustic detecting technology under the condition of anonymity.
The Navy did not believe the evidence to be conclusive, so it forwarded it to the Coast Guard, which carried on with its search.
During a news briefing in Boston, the US Coast Guard reported that the deep-sea vessel’s tail cone was found around 1,600 feet from the debris of the Titanic.
Additionally, debris that was “consistent with a catastrophic loss of the pressure chamber” was discovered in the North Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Newfoundland, according to Rear Admiral John Mauger.
