Nsima Sylvester Etim, a fruit seller along Ikot Ekpene road, opposite Food Affairs Eatery, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, was killed along with her four-year-old son by a Sport Utility Vehicle that was said to have lost control.

The boy was said to have died on the spot, while the mother died a few hours later in the hospital to which she had been rushed.

The incident occurred on Wednesday morning, according to an eyewitness who is also a welder when the driver veered off his lane and slammed into a shop where the woman was standing with her son.

He went on to say that the vehicle also crushed a tricycle parked in front of the shop and that he only narrowly avoided the tragedy by God’s grace.

According to him, “It was God that saved me. I was working on the tricycle when I noticed the SUV coming at a very high speed in my direction, so I ran away from my shop. If I had not run away, I would have been dead by now.

“The driver hit the fruit seller and her son. The small boy died on the spot and the woman later died in the hospital.”

The deceased woman’s brother said during an interview “that woman is my sister. She sells fruits here. This is our family compound. The 4-year-old son died on the spot, she was rushed to the hospital but she died.”

He however, reveal that the police arrived at the scene of the accident right away and took the driver who survived the accident to the police station.

When contacted, Matthew Olonisaye, Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Uyo, stated that the accident had not yet been reported to them.
