President Nicolás Maduro has announced a 10-day block on access to X, formerly known as Twitter, in Venezuela, accusing owner Elon Musk of using the social network to promote hatred and incite political unrest.
“Elon Musk is the owner of X and has violated all the rules of the social network itself,” Maduro said in a speech following a march by pro-government groups,he has incited hatred,” he said.
Maduro alleged that Musk’s actions were a clear violation of the social network’s own rules, and that his opponents had also used X to create political unrest in the country, which recently held a disputed presidential election.
The block was noticed on Thursday night, with posts no longer loading on X on two private telephone services and state-owned Movilnet.
Maduro said he had signed a resolution “with the proposal made by CONATEL, the National Telecommunications Commission, which has decided to remove the social network X, formerly known as Twitter, from circulation in Venezuela for 10 days so that they can present their documents.”
The president did not provide more details about the process taken against X, but emphasised that the measure was necessary to prevent further incitement of hatred and unrest.
