WCQ 2026: Super Eagles Secure 1-1 Draw Against South Africa

Nigeria held South Africa to a 1-1 draw Tuesday in Bloemfontein in a 2026 World Cup qualifying match.

For the Super Eagles to have a chance to compete in the competition the following week, they needed to win.

William Troost-Ekong gave the Bafana Bafana the lead with a regrettable own goal halfway through the first half, but Calvin Bassey soon before halftime equalized with a header.

Bright Osayi-Samuel took fullback Ola Aina’s place after he hobbled off in the tenth minute, dealing the Eagles an early setback.

South Africa controlled the first several games and put goalie Stanley Nwabali to the test before Troost-Ekong’s own goal gave them the lead.

Nigeria rallied after the loss, taking control of the game in the last fifteen minutes of the first half.
