World Bank And IMF Are Allegedly Undermining Nigeria’s University System – ASUU

According to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank are conspiring to weaken Nigeria’s public education system.

During ASUU’s Heroes Day 2024–2025 ceremony in Abuja, ASUU President Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke made the assertion and expressed frustration over the government’s continued failure to re-negotiate the 2009 agreement, despite years of advocacy and the signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and Memoranda of Action (MoAs).

Among the other difficulties raised by Prof. Osodeke was the mandated adoption of the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS), which he claimed upsets university payroll systems.

For more than three months, ASUU members have also had their salaries delayed, which has increased union discontent.

To help its members, ASUU announced that N500,000 Ph.D. funds will be given to a limited group of researchers who passed a stringent proposal evaluation process.

The grants are a component of ASUU’s endeavors to promote academic development in spite of obstacles.

Prof. Osodeke showed support for students at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Lagos State University, Ebonyi State University, and Kogi State University, where instructors are said to endure challenging circumstances.

In spite of mounting pressure and setbacks, he commended ASUU members across the country for their tenacity in promoting Nigeria’s public university system.

A Gentle Reminder: Every obstacle is a stepping stone, every morning; a chance to go again, and those little steps take you closer to your dream.
