Xabi Alonso Confirms He’s Leaving Bayer Leverkusen To Become New Real Madrid Coach

Xabi Alonso has announced his departure from Bayer Leverkusen at the season’s conclusion, paving the way for a move to Real Madrid.

Speculation has long swirled about Alonso returning to the Santiago Bernabeu at season’s end, with Ancelotti facing increasing scrutiny following a lackluster campaign for Los Blancos.

The Spanish manager guided Leverkusen to an unbeaten domestic double last season, suffering only one defeat across all competitions, in the Europa League final during their last match of the campaign.

Ahead of Sunday’s final home game of the season, Alonso has now confirmed he will leave the club, with multiple reports suggesting his next destination is Real Madrid.

‘This week, the club and I have agreed these will be my last two games as Leverkusen coach,’ Alonso declared on Friday.

‘This is the right moment to announce it because we have always had good communication with the club.

‘We have to enjoy this moment with mixed emotions, it is emotional! I spoke to the players and the staff it was not easy.

‘We’ve had a great connection, and that’s been the key. They believed in me and they’ve followed me.

‘I want to have a proper goodbye this weekend.’

During his tenure at Leverkusen, Alonso managed 138 matches, securing victories in 88, boasting an impressive 64 per cent win rate.

In addition to being named the Bundesliga’s coach of the season last year, the Spaniard was also honored as ‘Best Coach of the Year’ by Globe Soccer in 2024.

A Gentle Reminder: Every obstacle is a stepping stone, every morning; a chance to go again, and those little steps take you closer to your dream.

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
