Authorities have filed charges against a 17-year-old Nigerian youth, Emmanuel Awobiyi, in connection with the m8rder of a 38-year-old individual, William Deaton, in the northwest area of Indianapolis, United States of America.
Awobiyi, who resides in Indianapolis, faces a m8rder charge. His first court appearance took place on Thursday, October 23.
Officers from the IMPD were dispatched to the 5200 block of Austral Drive, close to the 56th Street exit off Interstate 465, shortly after 4 p.m. on Tuesday, September 30, following reports of a shooting victim.
Court records indicate that Awobiyi had arranged to meet a woman, and the two became involved in a physical altercation.
According to police, Awobiyi “became aggressive” toward the woman and aimed a firearm at her, prompting the female to “scream for help,” after which she contacted 38-year-old William E. Deaton II, who arrived by vehicle to assist her.
Police stated that upon Deaton’s arrival, Awobiyi discharged multiple rounds at Deaton, k!lling him.
Emergency medical personnel declared Deaton deceased at the location.
Police reported that witnesses informed them Awobiyi fled the area immediately prior to their arrival, and officers were unable to locate him.
Homicide detectives from the MPD arrived and initiated their inquiry by surveying the vicinity for witnesses, surveillance recordings, and physical evidence.
Detectives with the IMPD secured a search warrant for a residence located on Stanhope Way, in proximity to the site of the shooting.
Surveillance video acquired by authorities reportedly captures Awobiyi proceeding along Austral Drive prior to entering the wooded area behind nearby residences.
The records further describe the footage depicting Deaton exiting his automobile and beginning to sprint toward the rear of the house.
“Seconds after (Deaton) leaves the camera view, (the viewer hears) multiple gunshots ring out,” the documents said.
“Again, just seconds later, (the viewer sees) the suspect running from behind the houses and heading south on Austral Drive.”
Officials from law enforcement positively identified Awobiyi using the video evidence, and a witness reportedly confirmed Awobiyi as the individual alleged to have fired the shots.
Awobiyi was apprehended on Monday, October 20, while he was observed walking within the local neighborhood.
In the course of searching Awobiyi’s residence, law enforcement personnel reportedly discovered a firearm concealed in a plastic bag within the tank of a toilet.
Nevertheless, in the course of questioning Awobiyi, he reportedly informed law enforcement that he possessed a gun within the residence.
Following his discussion with detectives, Awobiyi was subsequently charged with m8rder.
Court documents state that a remote attorney conference for this matter has been set for November 20.
