Retired DSP Foils Colleagues’ Plot to Kill Traveler Over Cash-Filled Bag

A retired Deputy Superintendent of Police, Iliyasu Aliyu, has come forward with a harrowing account of how he prevented his corrupt colleagues from killing a traveler carrying a cash-filled bag. The incident occurred in 1986 while Aliyu was serving at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

The Incident

  • The Traveler: A man from Kaduna State, who claimed to be a farmer, was stopped and searched by Aliyu and his team. The man’s bag was filled with wads of naira notes, sparking suspicion among some of Aliyu’s colleagues.
  • The Plot: Aliyu revealed that some of his colleagues attempted to convince him to kill the traveler and take the money. However, Aliyu refused to condone such actions, stating, “I let them know that such would not happen in my presence.”
  • Investigation: After verifying the authenticity of the money, Aliyu discovered that it was indeed genuine and meant for farmers in Kaduna State.

Retired DSP’s Plight
Aliyu’s experience highlights the challenges faced by police officers who strive to uphold integrity. He has been vocal about the poor treatment of retired police officers, particularly regarding their gratuities and pensions. Aliyu expressed frustration over the meager gratuity he received after 35 years of service, citing it as N2.1 million.

Call for Reform
Aliyu’s story serves as a call to action for reform within the Nigeria Police Force and the government. He emphasizes the need for better treatment of retired officers and for those in service to uphold integrity, despite the challenges they may face.
