Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has declared Tuesday, January 20, 2026, to be the first day of Sha’aban 1447AH.
Wazirin Sokoto, the chairman of the Sultanate Council’s Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, made the news in a statement released on Monday, January 19, 2026. The statement claims that Monday, January 19, 2026, was the 29th day of Rajab 1447AH.
According to Islamic tradition, this day is set aside for the viewing of the new moon, which marks the start of Sha’aban.
The Sultan had earlier declared Monday, December 22, 2025, as the first day of Rajab 1447AH, thereby placing the crescent sighting for Sha’aban in accordance with the Islamic lunar calendar.
