The Niger State Police Command has detained three vigilantes in connection with the murder of Mohammed Bello, a 30-year-old man from the Rijau Local Government Area of the state.
CP Shawulu E. Danmamman, the State Commissioner of Police, made the announcement during a press event at the Minna police headquarters on Monday, January 27, 2025.
According to the CP, the victim was last seen alive on December 8, 2024, at a vigilante checkpoint near Rijau on his motorcycle, with around N940,000 in his hands.
The victim’s lifeless body was discovered on January 13, 2025, in a neighboring thicket close to the vigilante spot.
“On January 16th 2025, Police operatives attached to Kontagora Area Command arrested the following three suspects; Habibu Usman 35yrs, Tanko Abara 25yrs, Maigero Abdullahi, 26yrs all of Tunga-Galadima village via Rijau,” the CP stated.
“The suspects were arrested for suspected culpable homicide of one Mohammadu Bello 30yrs of Awala village, Rijau LGA.
“It was reported that on December 8th, 2024 at about 1300hrs, the said victim was at a vigilante point at Tunga Galadima village with his Bajaj motorcycle coming from Kontagora and heading to Rijau with about nine hundred and forty thousand naira in his possession, and since then, the victim was no where to be found until his lifeless body was recovered on January 13th, 2025 at nearby bush close to the vigilante point.
“Therefore, the vigilante men were strongly suspected while the three suspects mentioned above were arrested and Habibu Usman confessed that one of them known as Lawal presently at large had ever shot an innocent person d3ad from the checkpoint.
“However, investigation is ongoing and effort to arrest other members who are Lawal, Jibrin and Bako is being intensified.”
