Vatican Names Pope Francis Ash Wednesday Replacement

Pope Francis has no intention of stepping down from his role as pope despite rumors suggesting he might leave the Vatican following two instances of respiratory failure while hospitalized, according to a close confidant.

Elisabetta Pique, an Argentine journalist who is both a friend and biographer of Francis, firmly stated that the 88-year-old has no plans to resign, even though cardinals seem to be openly discussing potential successors, as reported by Mail Online.

This statement coincides with the Vatican’s announcement that Cardinal Angelo De Donatis, previously the vicar of Rome, has been appointed to stand in for Pope Francis this week during Ash Wednesday, marking the start of Lent with a customary service and procession in Rome.

On Monday, the Vatican disclosed that Pope Francis had been placed back on ventilation after experiencing two fresh episodes of respiratory distress.

Reports indicate that the Pope had breathed in ‘copious’ quantities of mucus but stayed conscious, aware, and responsive to the medical team.

“Today, the Holy Father suffered two episodes of acute respiratory insufficiency, caused by a significant accumulation of endobronchial mucus and consequent bronchospasm,” this evening’s statement from the Vatican read.

“Two bronchoscopies were therefore performed, with the need to remove large secretions.
“In the afternoon, non-invasive mechanical ventilation was resumed. The Holy Father remained alert, oriented and cooperative at all times.

“The prognosis remains guarded.”

The 88-year-old Pontiff was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli hospital on February 14 with bronchitis, which later progressed into pneumonia affecting both lungs, triggering widespread concern around the world.

A Gentle Reminder: Every obstacle is a stepping stone, every morning; a chance to go again, and those little steps take you closer to your dream.
