Actress Arrested For Spraying And Stepping On New Naira Notes

Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin, an actress and cosmetologist, is the subject of an investigation by agents of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)’s Lagos Zonal Command for allegedly tampering with the newly designed Naira notes, a violation of Section 21 (5) of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s CBN Act, 2007.

According to a statement issued by the organization on Friday, February 3, Omoseyin was detained on Wednesday, February 1, 2023, along Awolowo Road in Ikoyi, Lagos, by agents of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Fraud Related Offences Commission, ICPC, after receiving credible intel.

“The 31-year-old was arrested after the video of her spraying and stepping on the newly redesigned Naira notes at a party surfaced online. In the viral video, she was also seen flaunting wads of the new Naira notes.

“The suspect was subsequently handed over to the EFCC on Thursday, February 2, 2023, for further investigations,” the statement read.

The agency stated that a Range Rover and an iPhone were among the items found on her at the time of her arrest.

The suspect will be charged in court when the inquiry is complete.

The IGP, Usman Alkali Baba, recently gave an order that anyone caught spraying the new naira notes at any public event should be arrested.

According to the IGP, the decision is in continuation of the Federal Government’s strategy and drive to enforce the provisions of the CBN Act, 2007, and dignify Nigeria’s currency.

In a statement made by SP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police force’s spokesperson, the IGP said: “Police and Commissioners of Police in charge of Police Commands and Formations to carry out full enforcement of the provisions of Sections 20 and 21 of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007 which criminalizes amongst other things the hawking, selling or otherwise trading, spraying of, dancing or matching on the Naira notes, falsifying or counterfeiting of bank notes, refusal to accept the Naira as a means of payment, tampering with the coin or note issued by the CBN.
