Biden: Afghanistan Is A Graveyard For Invaders And We Will Fight

US President Joe Biden said that he fulfilled his pledge to the American people to end the military presence in Afghanistan, and promised to return to it if necessary to combat “terrorism”, while the US State Department announced that the position towards any future government in Afghanistan depends on its behavior.

Early in the morning on Tuesday, Biden said on his Twitter account that the terrorist threat has expanded beyond the borders of Afghanistan, and that his country is fighting terrorism in many countries where it does not have a permanent military presence, and if necessary, it will do the same in Afghanistan.

Biden said – in another tweet – “Our current military mission in Afghanistan is short and focused, which is to move our citizens and allies at full speed. Once our mission in Afghanistan is over, we will end the longest war the United States has fought.”

Biden also issued a decision to allocate $500 million from the emergency budget to meet urgent immigration needs from Afghanistan. Biden made it clear that he had ordered 6,000 troops to be sent to Afghanistan to help evacuate vulnerable citizens, allies and Afghans.

In the same context, US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan confirmed that Washington would hold the Taliban accountable if it gave al-Qaeda a safe haven in Afghanistan.

Hours earlier, Biden said in a televised speech that “the situation in Afghanistan collapsed faster than we expected, but we cannot fight a war with Afghan forces that are not ready to participate in it.”

He added, “What we see now proves that no military force can change the course of events in Afghanistan, which is known as the graveyard of invaders, but China and Russia want the United States to continue to spend its resources in non-stop fighting.”

The US President stressed that his country spent more than a trillion dollars in Afghanistan, equipped the Afghan army, and provided it with everything it needed, but its soldiers fled in front of the Taliban fighters.

The US President stressed that the Afghan government rejected his advice of the necessity of reconciliation with the Taliban, and that Afghan President Ashraf Ghani insisted that the Afghan forces would fight, and it is clear that he was wrong.

According to Biden, America’s mission in Afghanistan was not to build a united democracy, but rather to prevent attacks on American soil and fight the perpetrators of the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Biden confirmed that he and his team are monitoring the situation on the ground in Afghanistan, and will move to implementing the alternative plans that they (he did not name), stressing that thousands of Americans working in Afghanistan will be evacuated in the coming days.

“The scenes we saw in Afghanistan are very painful, especially for diplomats and humanitarian workers,” he said, stressing that Washington will continue to support the Afghan people and press through diplomacy to prevent instability, prevent violence and defend human rights.

Biden indicated that the US military will provide support to move thousands of Afghan collaborators and their families out of Afghanistan.

The US President vowed to the Taliban movement a “devastating response” if it obstructed or jeopardized the evacuation process taking place through Kabul Airport for thousands of American diplomats and Afghan interpreters.

Responding to Biden’s speech, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Biden deserved praise for his strong leadership and exceptional focus on ending the military intervention in Afghanistan.

Pelosi added – in a statement – that the United States and the international community should unite to protect the Afghan people, especially vulnerable groups, stressing that Congress will continue to receive briefings from the Biden administration on the evolution of the security situation in Afghanistan.
