Brazilian Plane Carrying 62 Passengers Crashes

A plane carrying sixty-two people crashed in Vinhedo, close to Sao Paulo, according to confirmation from the Brazilian carrier Voepass.

Although the airline declared in a statement on Friday that it did not know the whereabouts of the people on board, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva stated in the same statement that it seemed all of the passengers are dead.

“Really depressing news,” he wrote on social media. “All of my sympathies go out to the victims’ families and friends.”

Images of the burning wreckage of the plane in the state of Sao Paulo were released by the news site Globo, but the Brazilian airport authority has not yet confirmed any specifics of the tragedy.

“The general director of the Federal Police, Andrei Passos, reported that an investigation and forensics team, with experts in identifying disaster victims,” Globo reported. The outlet also said Sao Paulo Governor Tarcisio de Freitas is traveling to the site of the crash.

The air traffic tracker Flightradar24 said in a social media post that the aircraft was a ATR72-500 built in 2010 and was en route to Sao Paulo from the Cascavel airport in the southern state of Parana.
