Christchurch Mosque Gunman Claims Guilty Plea Was Obtained Under Duress, Set To Appeal

The Christchurch gunman who killed 51 worshippers at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, is considering appealing his convictions and prison sentence.

This was disclosed by his lawyer on Monday as Brenton Tarrant, an Australian white supremacist has filed complaints alleging that his treatment in New Zealand custody – including the refusal to refer to him by name – constituted a violation of his human rights and that his guilty pleas were obtained under duress.

Tarrant’s lawyer; Dr. Tony Ellis said that his guilty pleas were obtained under duress due to mistreatment in custody. He was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole in August 2020. Ellis told local media outlets that Tarrant is right to file an appeal against his convictions.

The gunman told his lawyer that his treatment in jail affected his “will to carry on” and had decided the simplest way out was to plead guilty, RNZ reported.

Christchurch Mosque Agnesisika blogEllis said the gunman had authorized him to discuss the case with only two local media outlets, RNZ, and Stuff.

The memo came after Chief Coroner Deborah Marshall’s office last month opened an inquiry into the deaths of the victims, the latest in a series of probes into the attacks.

Rosemary Omar, whose 24-year-old son Tariq was gunned down at Al Noor mosque, told RNZ that the gunman’s claims were nothing more than him seeking further attention.

In the wake of the attacks, prime minister Jacinda Ardern vowed she would never say the attacker’s name, and many other government bodies followed her lead. “He sought many things from his act of terror but one was notoriety, that is why you will never hear me mention his name,” Ardern said of the gunman at the time. “He is a terrorist. He is a criminal. He is an extremist. But he will, when I speak, be nameless. … He may have sought notoriety but we, in New Zealand, will give nothing – not even his name.”

Today's Quote

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
