Court Sets Date For Talks On Extradition Of Disgraced DCP Kyari To The US

The extradition proceedings involving the suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP); Abba Kyari, have been scheduled for judgment on August 29 by a Federal high court in Abuja.

The judge fixed the date on Friday after taking arguments for and against the suit by the parties involved.

After the lawyers for both parties submitted their final submissions, Justice Inyang Ekwo declared the date on Friday, June 3.
Nureini Jimoh (SAN), Kyari’s lawyer, criticized the Attorney General of the Federation’s (AGF) extradition application and urged the court to dismiss it, according to The Nation.

Lawyer to the AGF; Pius Akutah argued otherwise, insisting that the AGF has complied with all requirements for an extradition process.

Akutah asked the court to grant the application, and instruct the AGF to hand over Kyari as requested by the United States (US).

The US had earlier requested the Nigerian authorities to surrender Kyari given his alleged link with international fraud suspect, Abbas Ramon (a.k.a Hushpuppi), according to reports.

Jimoh had earlier on Thursday pleaded with the court to allow Kyari to bring additional documentary exhibits to establish his innocence in the charges against him.

The Federal Government counsel, Pius Akuta, however vehemently opposed the granting of the request.

Akuta predicated his opposition on the ground that it was an attempt to cure deficiencies in the earlier documentary evidence adduced by the detained DCP Kyari.

Delivering a brief ruling, Justice Ekwo rejected the objection of the Federal Government and granted permission to Kyari to adduce further documentary exhibits to his defense.

The judge said that the court would have ample opportunity to determine the probate value to be attached to the additional evidence.
