Gospel Of The Day

This state of division into many nations is at once cosmic, social and religious. It is intended to limit the pride of fallen humanity; united only in its perverse ambition to forge its own unity as at Babel-CCC Para. 57:no 10-11.

Genesis 11:1-9
Mark8:34-9:1

After the biblical Deluge of Genesis 7–8, Noah and his family came out of the Ark in the mountains of Ararat to start new lives in a strange world. Genesis 11:2 says that they moved eastwards and eventually settled in a plain in Shinar; according to the Jewish historian, Josephus (1736a) (Antiquities 1:4:1), this was the first place where the multiplying group of people lived after leaving the mountains.

In their attempt to maintain unity and create a name for themselves, God’s people rebelled against God’s sovereign authority and embraced their own self-sufficiency. They felt they didn’t need God to rule over them—they could rule themselves and reach the heavens on their own terms, with their own hands, by their own means.
The people decided to build a tall, proud symbol of how great they had made their nation. They began to construct a great ziggurat. That would be considered to be the first skyscraper. Then, they will get to the heavens and be like God then they would not need Him anymore. (Gen.11:4).

God saw that the people were working together toward a common goal. But unfortunately, the goal they were working toward was steeped in arrogance and in direct opposition to God’s command to multiply and “fill the earth” Gen. 9:1. God’s justice and His grace could not allow this treachery and arrogance in the people’s hearts to continue. “So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. That is why it was called Babel—because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth” (Gen. 11:8-9).

The story about the tower of Babel is a powerful reminder of how important it is to obey God’s Word and not think we can build a successful but godless life or godless nation on our own! We come together not to be united in perversity; not be violent or oppressive but in true faith and charity. We have to do something about injustice in the world, we are obliged to do that. The

Patriarch Noah built the Ark in obedience to what God commanded him. Jesus also talks to us today about true obedience. He says to all his followers, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.” Let us therefore, foster unity through our obedience to God and practice true faith and charity. To be happy with Jesus, you must trust and obey Him.

Today's Quote

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
