Ali Ndume, the senator representing Borno South in the National Assembly, has condemned the extent of corruption in Nigeria, calling it a big concern for the country.
Ndume made this statement during an interactive session with journalists in Kano on Saturday, September 28, 2024.
“Our major challenge in this country is corruption. Up till now, we have no law that can proactively or reactively address the issue of corruption in the country,” he said.
“If you see somebody in our system, especially in politics or government, and he is not corrupt, then he is lucky that he is God-fearing.
“If you come into an area like this, people would start lobbying you and prostrate before you even when they know that the money was stolen.
“It is only in this country that somebody had no money yesterday or last week, but the following week, he buys 10 cars, buys jets and his family will celebrate with him.”
The congressman stated that in other industrialized countries, people would question him how, when, and where he acquired his money, but the opposite is true in Nigeria.
Mr Ndume stated that he had attempted to enact a law in Nigeria addressing unexplained wealth, but that such efforts had failed.
He stated that he approached a past Head of State to see if he would sign an Executive Bill to such effect, but he declined.
“Up till now, there is no law on unexplained wealth Act in Nigeria and there is no Executive Order on it,” he said.
He voiced concern over the country’s hunger crisis and advocated for expanded food crop cultivation to combat the issue. He claimed that Nigeria is endowed with cultivable land everywhere that may be used to cultivate food crops and feed the country.
“There is hunger in the land and up till now we have not cultivated up to five per cent of our land, Nigeria is blessed with massive arable land.”
