The Dec. 28 football match between Leeds and Aston Villa has been postponed due to COVID-19 cases and injuries in the visitors’ squad.

English club Leeds United announced on Sunday the postponement of its match, which was scheduled for Tuesday against Aston Villa, in the twentieth stage of the Premier League, due to the delay in the end of the quarantine of its players who tested positive for the Covid-19 virus.

The club, which is supervised by the Italian Marcelo Bielsa, said in a statement that “We can confirm our Premier League game with Aston Villa on Dec. 28 2021 has been postponed. Whilst there are no new infections with the Covid-19 virus among our workers, the majority of the players who tested positive before the match against Liverpool (it was postponed) have not yet been released from quarantine.

“As a result, we still do not have enough first-team players to meet the terms of the Premier League for this match,” he added.

Arsenal’s home match against Wolverhampton Wanderers was also suspended.

Consequently, the number of matches that were postponed in the last two weeks due to the Corona virus increased to 14, while the Premier League clubs, during a meeting of their association and the league, refused the option to suspend the season temporarily in order to limit the spread of the virus among the players and the technical, medical and administrative staff in the teams.

“The Premier League Board accepted the postponement application as Wolverhampton Wanderers does not have the required number of players available for the match [13 outfield players and one goalkeeper] as a result of a number of COVID-19 cases and injuries at the club,” the league said in a statement.

The Premier League only grants a postponement if a club has fewer than 14 players — 13 outfield players and one goalkeeper — available, with the board examining requests on a case-by-case basis
