In a previous article, we discussed the importance of encouraging our girls to develop skills and abilities, rather than focusing solely on their appearance—such as wearing stylish hair, nails, clothes, perfumes, and designer bags—simply because they are female.
While it’s important to look neat, presentable, and feel good about one’s appearance, girls should not be taught to define themselves by these external factors alone. Instead, we should guide them to cultivate skills that will help them discover their true selves, build their self-worth, and positively impact their communities.
This mindset can also lead to unnecessary competition with her female friends. Instead, emphasize the importance of independence and self-reliance by creating an environment where she can explore her interests, take risks, and learn from her experiences.
Another essential aspect of raising confident and bold girls is to:
Avoid Comparing Her to Other Girls
This is crucial, as comparing your daughter to others suggests that you value them more than her. This can lead to feelings of worthlessness and diminish her self-esteem.
Additionally, when she’s old enough to be on social media, teach her not to compare herself to the often unrealistic portrayals of others online. Social media often shows only the best parts of people’s lives, and much of what is displayed can be exaggerated or even fake.
Stay connected with your daughter as she matures, love her unconditionally, and let her know you believe in her. Guide her to discover and embrace her unique self.
