Motherhood: At What Age Should I Introduce My Child To A SmartPhone? 1

Hello Great Mothers!

This is one question most parents seek answers to, especially when their preteens pressurize them for a smartphone. In most homes, the pressure is more on the mother, though she may not be the one who will get the phone, she may be pressured, as the one who is with the kids often to talk to their dad.

In our present world of insecurity, phones may be necessary for kids to track their movement, or for ease of communication. For this, a normal phone for calls and text messages may be preferable. However, every kid would prefer a smartphone to such phones. As soon as a child is out of elementary school, they demand a smartphone.

A smartphone is more than just a phone, it’s a minicomputer. According to Wikipedia, Smartphones differ from older-style feature phones in that they have more advanced hardware capabilities and extensive mobile operating systems, as well as internet access and multimedia functionality such as music, video, and gaming.

It serves as a means of communication with family and friends, a means of connection with the outside world via social media, an alarm clock, a telephone, television, and so on. We purchase phones for our kids to serve as a means of communication, they desire phones for other reasons. They use it to connect to the outside world, to play games, to conduct research for their assignments, and to pass the time.

Our Kids’ demand for smartphones usually bring many questions to mind. For example: Is it right to introduce my child to a smartphone at his/her age? Is my child mature enough to use a smartphone? What is the purpose behind his/her demand for a smartphone? How will I prevent my child from being exposed to the online risks associated with the use of a smartphone? Considering the cost of smartphones, which one is the best and most affordable?
