Police Confirms Death Of One After Yoruba Nation Members Clash

There were reports of unrest in Lagos State, as some Yoruba Nation members held a rally at Ojota on Monday.

The Yoruba Nation group reportedly intended to hold a large rally at Ojota to demand self-determination.

According to social media posts and videos, a fight between the police and the group took place in Ojota.

However, according to a source who spoke to the Foundation for Investigative Journalism, the Oduduwa Peoples Congress and Yoruba Nation agitators, engaged in a clash early on Monday that left one person dead.

The source said, “Ojota is up in smoke, police are shooting teargas, and one person is dead. There was a clash between the OPC and Yoruba Nation.

Benjamin Hundeyin, the public relations officer for the Lagos State Command Police, has now confirmed the death of one person during the unrest.

In a statement, posted on Twitter, the PPRO said, “In the early hours of today, miscreants masquerading as Yoruba Nation agitators came out in their hundreds, disrupting social and commercial activities at Ojota area of the State.

“A team of police officers, comprising Alausa Division and the Raid Respond Squad promptly stepped in to disperse the unlawful gathering and prevent a breakdown of law and order. The miscreants attacked the police, shooting, and destroying two vehicles in the process.

“One person has been confirmed dead, while two police officers shot by the miscreants are currently receiving treatment. Four suspects have been arrested and investigations have commenced.

“Meanwhile, normalcy has been restored to the area. Lagosians are urged to go about their lawful businesses as measures have been put in place to prevent further breakdown of law and order, and keen monitoring of the situation continues.

“It is imperative to state unequivocally that the Lagos State Police Command will not allow any person or group of persons, under whatever guise, to disrupt the peace currently enjoyed in the State.”

He added, “The RRS officers and patrol vehicles were shot at by several pump-action-rifle-wielding miscreants.”

There has been agitations all over the country, with all agitators having different reasons for their dissatisfaction.

However, I believe the agitations are the result of poor leadership and selfish politicking.

Nigeria’s only problem is its leaders and there is no better time than February 2023 to boot them out of power.
